News & Reviews Review Crucial Ballistix PC4000 DDR RAM

Crucial Ballistix PC4000 DDR RAM

It is often observed that people are always looking for a better RAM, than what’s already installed in their PC. This is because people don’t realize the efficiency of their RAM on daily basis, until they realize it while working on some pace based project.

The PC4000 DDR RAM is a 1 GB set of dual channel DDR from crucial. Sold as brand name crucial Ballistix, this pair of 512 MB PC4000 DDR modules have been proved very effective. This 184 pin DDR attains 250 MHz of default rated speed, or PC4000. 3-4-4-8 is very conservative default timings. The voltage reaches as high as 2.8V to reach the overclocked speed of 250 MHz.

The yellow color of Neng Tyi headspreader of the ballistix line contrasts beautifully against the black PCB and lettering.

The process of overclocking ballistix PC4000 starts at 200 MHz and then the clock speed memory was increased in ~5 MHz intervals, and this is where the system delivers errors. The processor used is AMD Athlon64 system. The motherboard used is DFI LANParty NF4 SLI-DR (NF4-SLI).the memory specifications are 2 x 512 MB crucial ballistix PC4000. The hard drive is 74GB Western Digital Raptor. The powersupply makes use of PC Power & Cooling TurboCool 510 SLI. At stock speeds, the crucial ballistix performs the same as its competition and when overclocked there is a slight boost in the performance.

Loosening up the memory timings to 3-4-4-8 allowed the ballistix memory to clock much higher and motherboard clock speed was set to 250 MHz. the memory had no problems and yielded great performance.

Hence by pitting the crucial ballistix with others, one may find that it’s not the fastest or greatest, but at the same time one may say that its not that shabby. Hence this is ideal for the no fuss overclocker who wants a good memory and at the same time doesn’t want to spend hours tweaking. Hence the Crucial Ballistix reaches an overclock speed  of 273 MHz, and is not at all bad for the specified price tag!
